about

Big Space and X14 met in 2016 over the unbearable loneliness of creating music that aims to interrupt and jarringly engage listeners by means of working with minimal equipment whilst counteracted with a multitude of cultural and aesthetic intentions aimed at showcasing alternative black electronic music. Proudly representing the other side of the tracks that is the Northern Suburbs of Johannesburg, the production process begun in 2022 while Big Space was writing his dissertation about the symbiotic yet unstable relationship between music aesthetics and brand awareness in the field of niche electronic music genres by exploring the concepts of music genre complexes and the development of electronic dance music and sub-genre creation as a tool of creating identity for artists and audiences alike. THEIR GENRE IS KAFF TEK.

The album is inspired by Pretoria house, dystopian noise, UK broken beats, hip-hop and the dream to show case the other side of the tracks of South Africa's blooming electronic music scene from a black middle class perspective. This is more than an album, Its a audio-visual project that captures X14 and Big Space's journey of understanding the meanings and ramifications of geographic socioeconomic cultural production and the fine art of ethical sub genre redefinition and creating agency for outsider artists. The album also includes a two-part video, music video/ single and limited edition art prints, and a remix project due in January 2023.
